Those of us who a Yosemite regulars are familiar with this restriction, as it is imposed every year around this time. I can understand your confusion and if I had not been previously aware of this closure, I might also have been confused.by hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The fact is that overnight a couple of feet of snow could fall and a car and it's occupants could potentially be trapped. Once there is significant snowfall, they stop plowing and let mother nature take over.by hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I think that some have grill racks, but personally, I wouldn't count on it, or put my food on there. As long as you aren't noisy and causing a huge commotion, I don't think you'll have a problem with 7 in a site. Of course, no more than two cars.by hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Quoteeveofdiscovery Quotebill-e-g Here's a shot of it from Last Year, May 8, 2009. I'm guessing you took this photo from an aircraft? May I also ask from what vantage point you took the April 2007 photo? Very cool shots, both!Looks to me like the view from Cloud's Rest, although I have never been there.by hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quotebill-e-g Quite possibly the best drive out from TM ever. (would have been nice though if Olmsted wasted socked in though) Minor hiccup at the end: Was it simply closed, or did you have to find someone to unlock it for you?by hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
OMG that's awful. I didn't see that when we went to Mirror Lake in the Spring, but we didn't go that way. That should be removed.by hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I don't understand this forum software. I posted in the bottom box, and it attached my comment about Vernal to the Young Lakes post. Go up to Gaylor Lakes, just inside the east entrance. It is steep (you gain 600 feet in the first 1/2 mile), but short (only 3 miles RT), and you are rewarded with access to several sub-alpine lakes and lush, grassy meadows. The 3 miles is a minimum, you can easily add more miles by exploring the area around the lakes. http://www.yosemitehikes.com/tioga-road/gaylor-lakes/gaylor-lakes.htmby hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. So what is the difference between today's hiker and John Muir? Was he more prepared? Was he in better shape? Did he have better survival skills? Did he have more time? Well, he definately had more time. He didn't have a 3 day weekend or a 7 day vacation to adhere to. He could be gone for months and had nowhere else to be. So did he get lost? Probably. Did he panic, probably not. Heby hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Giving shooting data like focal length, ISO, exposure, etc. is something that many budding photographers like to know. Look through any photography magazine and you will see that data listed. For a shot like that, focal length can make a difference, because the wider the lens, the less pronounced the star streaks will be. Yes, their length is determined by the shutter speed, but the wider theby hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quoteeeek Quotehotrod4x5If the water is as low as in Eeek's photo, then the rafting will be closed. You'll have to play that one by ear. Rafting usually closes in late July.I never paid attention to when it closes. I have done it once in early July, it was fun, we did it two days in a row. Quoteeeek Quotehotrod4x5Then hike up to Vernal Fall as suggested. In the afternoon you'll see a rainbow at the base of the fall if there is enough spray. In September?Ya, I should have bolded the word IF. You're right, it'll be pretty small and there won't be any spray for a rainbow. But still a worthwhile hike.by hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Book (in advance by calling) the Valley Floor Tour. IMO this is a very good introduction for the first timer. It is about 2 hours and is given in an open air tram by a knowledgeable tour guide. Do it first if you can. Then hike up to Vernal Fall as suggested. In the afternoon you'll see a rainbow at the base of the fall if there is enough spray.
