It is my understanding that the road is one way, down only. There is a sign in El Portal, where the pavement meets the dirt that says One Way, Do Not Enter. I believe that the one way portion begins at the first bridge when you are coming downhill. That first waterfall is very easy to hike to, and for the casual hiker, is a very nice destination. That road is locked now? I have driven down it two times, once just to photograph the first water fall, then another time all the way to El Portal. Is a fun drive, too bad if it is locked.by hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Looks like a great trip. Be careful using polarizing filters at high altitudes and with wide angle lenses. At high altitudes they can turn the sky nearly black and with wide angle lenses you can get an uneven sky because a polarizing filter works at an angle that is 90 degrees off axis to the sun, as you move away from that angle, the intensity lessens. A wide angle lens can capture enough skyby hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

You ask for tips to make the trip more comfortable, what do you mean? What kind of tips are you looking for? Do you need suggestions on hikes? Tourist stuff? Places to eat? What I tell most first timers is to book a trip on the Valley Floor Tour. It is given in an open air tram and is a good introduction to the valley, you'll see all the valley's major sites and get a wealth of informatby hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Ok, I should have been more specific. People who visit and are not prepared with adequate water, spare tire and stay on the main roads. Like this lady and her poor son, for example: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32340356/ Who should not have gone off roading AFTER changing to her spare tire. Just so you are aware, the Pines campground office is in the northeast corner of the large, dirt Curry Village parking lot. If I was doing your trip, I think I would try for a spot at either Toulumne Meadows or maybe Bridalveil. The valley in August is a place I will never go again. I went once. It is hot, crowded and the water is usually too low for rafting (might not be this year). And asby hotrod4x5 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

BEST is so relative. Personally, I don't think the pizza at the Tioga Mart is anything special. I am not a "gourmet" pizza kinda guy, I guess. Give me a good crust, good sauce and pepperoni and sausage, that's all I need. What makes some pizzas better for me are things like spicy, but not too spicy, sauce and thicker than typical crust that's soft, yet firm.
