My arrow could certainly not be in the exact place but I don't think it was where your red circle is. We saw the slide while the crashing was still being heard and there was a column of dust to the left of the falls. Not uncommon I assume, but I witnessed my first rock slide in the valley today. At 8:51 am on our way up to Oh My Gosh Point, we heard a loud crashing sound and spotted a rock slide in progress on the south side of the valley. I didn't have access to my camera as it was in my daypack and we were in the lower treed area, but I was able to spot where it looked to have originated. Thanks! It doesn't look too steep from that vantage point. So it's from the NE that it looks like a basket. I'll see if we get there this summer. Chuckby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Last year we did the North Dome hike from Tioga Road and picked a day with too many clouds to get the best photos. I expect we'll try again this year. I was looking at Google Earth to see about going to Basket Dome. I guess there is no trail to it. I found a Youtube video taken from Basket Dome saying it's easy to get there from the saddle on North Dome. Anyone done this? Is it easy? Looks like yby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Hwys 41, 120, and 140 are state highways so I can't imagine there is a different set of laws just because they cross a park boundary. But I have never seen one instance of a cop pulling over a slow driver with a stack of traffic behind them anywhere ever. If they did that on a regular basis like they hand out speeding tickets, drivers would get the message and pull over more frequently. Everyoneby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Although I don't condone speeding in the park nor do I engage in it, I try to drive the speed limit whenever possible. If someone does tailgate me then I will pull over and let them by or if they start to pass I'll take my foot off the gas to make it easier for them. I don't think it is my role to enforce the speed limits and I don't want some p***ed off driver on my tail.by Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I think it is debatable whether HDR is really necessary with a modern digital camera. There are other techniques to deal with the shadow areas. 1) Shoot RAW so you have access to the full bit depth of the camera. Then when you stretch the shadow areas it will be less noisy and less posterized. 2) If #1 is not good enough, shoot multiple exposures and stack them. We do this routinely in astrby Calaveras - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Okay, a couple of comments. The sky is not blown out. HDR would have made no difference. The sky was uniform diffused white. There was no detail to be had. Second, yes the bottom is distorted. It has to do with the way Photoshop assembles the images. I'm not sure what to do about that. I commented above that we plan to go back next year when the falls are good on a sunny day. What is it about drivers in the park? They get in the park and act like the rules of the road no longer apply, like they're in some kind of natural Disneyland. I think you can only capture this view if you do a panorama. This image was taken in June but it was a cloudy day. A year ago this October when my friend and I were leaving the park on Hwy 120 between Crane Flat and the park exit when a bear at full gallop came up over the edge of the road and ran right in front of us. On September 22 we hiked to Echo Ridge. We experienced the best 360 degree panoramic views yet. For us older types, it was a strenuous hike, more so than Peak 10450. I'm sure your definition of a "little smoke" is my definition of a lot of smoke. I'm an astrophotographer and by my definition the sky has smoke in it almost everyday once we get into July.
