Nice! I need to get up there soon. It's been nearly a year since I've been to Yosemite, I'm just living through photos like yours for now.by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
That's awesome! Thank you for taking the time to put all this information together. Love the photos.by JasonS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Bring a bike and a cable lock if you can manage it. A bicycle is a great way to get around the valley without having to use a car and you can get away from the crowds quickly.by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Very cool! Thanks for posting. I'm curious about the climbing gear (I'm not a climber)...... you had harnesses and was there some sort of thingy (technical term) that clamped or grabbed the cable? I think I've seen a video of people going Sequoias using ropes and something like that. Looks like a cool trip, even though it was cut short.by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Awesome! I enjoy backpacking, but I still really like spending time in the valley as a "tourist" too. Camping or tent cabins, cooking or eating whatever is available for sale. It's a great way to spend a day or two, riding bikes and seeing the sights, especially (for me) in the fall early in the morning. It's almost like you can have the place to yourself. Thanks for the photos aby JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yeah, good looking photos. I looked thorugh the other photos as well.Such a bummer there is so little snow.by JasonS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Sweet! That looks like a good time, thanks for sharing your trip and photos. Personally, I think I'm enduring my second longest ever "drought" for visiting Yosemite......... need to get back there soon.by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Nice! I was totally believing it until the lake idea came up............ then it was just a fun read. Thanks for pulling my leg.by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
This brings back some memories for me. My wife and I did this loop on our second day in Hawaii, the conditions look similar too. Good times. Thanks for taking me back to 2002.by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Quotebasilbop QuoteJasonS I'm a bit curious about one thing, in the last photo next the the 13,000ft marker, what is the little wire/antenna thingy protruding from the left side of her back pack, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks! It's an antenna (a Comet SMA-24, to be exact) for a small 2m/70cm amateur/HAM radio (Yaesu VX-3R). We use these to keep in touch when temporarily separated. I just looked through the photos too, more good stuff! It makes me want to go to Hawaii again. Very cool 'synths! Thanks for sharing them. It's such a different looking landscape; except for the clouds, snow and telescopes (obviously) I would imagine it would make a good substitute for Mars.by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Awesome! Thanks for the report and photos. That one photo from the Diving Board with your hiking pole in view kind of gives me the heebie-jeebies, it's like I can feel the exposure. Not sure how much exposure there was at that spot, but the photo makes it seem like a lot. Love the photos.by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotechick-on Confused by this. That is you a looking at Nevada Fall. I presume you went to Glacier Point before or after Mono Meadow? If not... of course.... ooopsie, right? You're correct, I must have known Neval Fall existed, as I was clearly looking at it and standing next to it. I knew it was a waterfall obviously, but that was it. On the first day we stopped the car at the Mono Meadoby JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quoteyosemitejim I was shocked a few years later when I saw Tunnel View. I know the feeling, I'm actually envious of people (not sure why) who come in that way and get their first real view of Yosemite at Tunnel View. It has to be absolutely stunning to see it the first time in that way. It's still an amazing view to me. On that same trip, we did stop and make the short walk, we were hobby JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteAnotherDave Jason - You two are both wearing basketball shoes for this trek. How did the feet/ankles hold up? I honestly don't remember any issues with shoes, clothes or gear. That being said, I was 22 years old and maybe it just didn't affect me. I had never been backpacking, knew nothing about it, and probably got away with stuff. I probably had a jacket (not a rain shell) but I don'by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I'm glad everyone enjoyed reading the report. I'm looking forward to getting back to Yosemite soon and writing a report that's a little more "recent". Chick-on, regarding Evelyn, it's still on the "list", but I don't have any firm plans or permits for this year. I am seriously considering a one night stay on top of Watkins early this spring though.by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Sweet. Thanks for sharing. My wife and I were up there last September and stayed in the cabins at Manzanita Lake, it's a nice park.by JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Since I haven’t been to Yosemite in far too long, I figured I’d hop in the “way, way back” machine and write a report of my first trip to Yosemite. Although I had been car camping a few times and done a bit of mountain biking, I really wasn’t a hiker and had never been to Yosemite. I did love to explore though, and one of my best friends convinced me to hike Half Dome once he was doby JasonS - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
We did the full moon snowshoe hike back in Jan 2008, I assume you'll be doing something similar. Here's our GPS track: And the same track in Google Earth: I'm curious to see how your route compares. We really enjoyed the trip, and although it was only 3.15 miles, I remember it taking a while. It started out in the trees: And we eventually had some wonderful views in thby JasonS - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
