My understanding is that with an El Nino you can get a wet winter but not for sure. If no El Nino then no wet winter. QuoteJohnC Can somebody translate that into layman's terms? QuoteTechieSteve Hi all, nice quick one this... Is it possible to hike cross country from Young Lakes, to the top of Cold Canyon/Virginia Canyon? I've got a Wilderness Permit for the 8th August, to Young Lakes, via Glen Aulin. It's not what I originally wanted, but at this point, I'll pretty much take what I can get, lol. There should be no snow up to the top of Hoffman as it is a south facing trail. Drive up 120 and you should be able to see the top of Hoffman from the road. Be prepared for mosquitos but don't be surprised if they aren't too bad. The trail conditions listed on the Yosemite NPS site is from a May 15 update. QuoteKevinD Hey Folks, While this isn't Yosemite related, I was hoping to get your help on hiking in snow (Rae Lakes/Glen Pass). According to the NPS, the north face of Glen Pass still has a few feet of snow and is doable via postholing. Now considering the trail isn't visible and that I've never hiked in snow before, would be safe to step IN or around previously traveled areas/postholes to maby mrcondron - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

I'd opt for Happy Isle to Clouds Rest. You'll hit both Vernal and Nevada and will get one of the better views from the higest point near the Valley.
