There were at least 50 people on the ice at Tenaya Lake on Sunday the 18th of Dec midday. Not all were skating...some walking, some pushing or pulling sleds. And 1/2 dozen still out at sunset. ( One booming crack surprised me and made me jump. ) There was a couple doing tai chi on the ice on the Tuolumne across from Lembert Dome. At the Dana Fork, someone had broken through on the edgby hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was a newbie, visiting Yosemite for the first times in 1976-1977 and I didn't know any better that Tioga Pass wasn't always open for well over half the year. Drove over Tioga in April in '77. Yes, of course it was north. I'm thinking alongside east/westbound 120, which heads NE at that point. So I just walked up higher and higher until the granite started dropping off in the direction of Tenaya Lake. Good tele view of Conness, even Sawtooth Ridge. Ha, any blasting would be right below... I walked straight up the south side of Pothole, but went down the easier slope on the east to check it out. It is a hike that my increasingly slacker family can manage. With surprising views. (In September, they sent me off to hike by myself, while they held down the fort at camp, and I was only going to Elizabeth Lake!) Last year, on Nov 17th, I walked east up from Olmstead Point.by hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Fabulous photos! Congrats. And just wait 25 years or so and you will really appreciate looking back on these. We got up at 3am to hike up to Glacier Point from Upper Pines on our wedding day to make sure that we got up there in time to watch the hang gliders launch. Got married in the chapel later that afternoon. (June 2) No professional photos, but the family took some. Had our 25thby hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Took a look at this route on Thursday...too much snow/ice...north facing slope and all. But I'll be heading up there next year. So I took my first (!) hike up Pothole Dome. Why I had never been up there yet...I don't know.by hikerchick395 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Hang on to your hats and steering wheels today, if going over Tioga Pass. I was up in Tuolumne yesterday and it was WINDY! Gusty, with occassional blowing snow across the highway (from current snowpack) and very crazy and dusty gusts in the Blue Slide area. My husband has the ZS3...we just bought the extra Panasonic brand battery. There were too many bad reviews using the knock-off batteries. Of course, I looked around to get the best price, free shipping, etc... And I have always bought extra Canon brand batteries for my Canon videocams. Maybe not all ski areas have year long permits like some of the others. Mammoth has a lot of activities, June runs the chairlifts in the summer... I believe Bear Mountain has mountain biking in the summer, too, but I'll bet some ski area have had only seasonal permits.by hikerchick395 - General Discussion
Quotebill-e-g Downloaded a zillion of them already. Thanks again.
