In this age of people playing video games, jumping off cliffs and over waterfalls is behavior that you can survive. (This is mild behavior compared to the death and destruction of some games.) Even when you "die," you have no real consequence. Maybe this mentality has crept in the sensibility portion of the brain, where people don't see the real consequence of their action. I would consider myself a Sierra nut, but Yosemite is the most beautiful and inspiring place I have ever seen, so far, in my life. Took a field natural history class that included the Sierra and Yosemite, which got me started...1976. Nice shots Steve. You went up on June 20 2008? (Flickr info) We went up June 12 2008. Took some video on cables but no photos. (The nephews had their big SLR's in their backpacks.) +1...weekends at this time of year are crazy! Saturday June 25 2011 was the busiest day that I personally have seen since when I worked in the valley...then the absolute busiest day that I experienced was Memorial Day 1978. On this latest June Saturday, what I experienced...a lot less people (in the valley) were out on bikes or on foot than usual, for some reason. eeek...you know I've been watching this subject for weeks and today is the first day that your pic from June 21 came up! (For example, kevclark360's first July 4 photo has not appeared yet.) First I will extend my sympathy to the families and friends of these men... More than likely these men were hit by a surge of water from the falls. Anyone like me, who can be mesmorized by the uneven surging of the swollen waterfalls as they tumble over the granite walls, can watch in awe, seeing the ebb and flow of the uneven volumne of water. Saturday the 25th was a traffic and parking nightmare! Athough the shuttle bus gets to use special lanes on the road, good luck having room on the bus to get on. It was his first season and I'm assuming that Bear was in the southern Sierra. He parachuted in a high country lake, encountered "wild" horses (and tried to ride one,) and swam across a reservoir to get out of the wilderness at the end. When you reserve a campsite, you are basically renting a space and you want your "space" to be respected. Our last campsite was near a restroom and it is difficult to persuade people to walk a few extra steps around.
