According to a recent National Park Article, you are not supposed to knock over cairns. You may be doing more harm than good: https://www.nps.gov/articles/rockcairns.htm "Each park has a different way it maintains trails and cairns; however, they all have the same rule: If you come across a cairn, do not disturb it. Aramark doesn't have the fortitude to publicly post the closures, but they hasd the gall/apathy to state that I cancelled my reservations: "We're sorry to hear that you've cancelled your reservation to stay at the White Wolf Lodge..." two reasons. One, it allows two nights in a nice campspot. The second is that hiking up that side of clouds rest with a full multi-day backpack will be more than strenuous. I didn't even want to hike down that trail with a full pack. The JMT trail around clouds rest is much less strenuous, although not as beautiful because of fire damage. Look at that hike in detail. That sounds like an amazing trip. If it were me, I'd tweak it a little. LYV is a communal experience. You'll be around a lot of people, which can be cool, but I'd hit it for just the first night. It does have the advantage of being near the merced river for swimming. Day 2 I'd take my pack towards half dome, stash it at the junction, and take a daypack to the top and back, then I'd take theby Coolburn - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I should not be surprised, but in a year when evrery other ski resort in California is celebrating the snow and extended seasons, Aramark has decided to close Badger Pass already. There was no announcement, they simply changed the Badger Pass web page to read "Closed for the 2023 Season." I think they were closed from around 2/25 because of the snow. Random replies: Thanks for confirming 2023 permit process. Also, thanks for wilderness boundary definition. Good points Mr. NQTG! I do think he may technically still be in the wilderness if he stayed on the eastern side of the Mirror Lake Loop trail until the start of the JMT. That way he hasn't gone "through the valley" or crossed any roads. If it was me, I'd call the ranger. Additionally, there is no TM campground, Backpackers or otherwise this year. SO if you are anywhere near yosemite village, your permit is invalid....You need to be on a wildeness trail, and the only one I see is around mirror lake. Don't mean to be a bummer, but I don't think that iteneary works for a couple of reasons, unless you get multiple permits. Re: the valley. You would not be able to leave the north rim via the Yose falls trail without violating the rule. You might be able to take the snow creek trail down to mirror lake and swing over to the mist trail, but youll need to do your homework on that trail. According to the app Trailon: https://www.traillon.com/routes/eTRumk8 That route is 43 miles minimum from Yose creek to North dome to halfdome to valley. Oh, If you have never hiked the mist trail, then its worth it to hike to Vernal falls, but right after the falls, ditch the mist trail, hike up to clark point and take the JMT. It will save your sanity. Its longer, but not as steep, not as narrow, and not as congested. You can see Nevada falls on the way out.
