On what I think was our first car camping trip with our kids, as we were setting up our tents, our kids saw RVs in some nearby sites. If you want to go specifically to a lake, there's a nice beach at the east end of Tenaya Lake, you can park close. If you want to hike some, Dog Lake in the Tuolumne Meadows area. The trail is dusty if you start by the Lembert Dome parking lot, but it's only about a 500 foot climb. Or May Lake, which has some nice scenery on the way up and is an easy hike. Quotenwhkr I got an email about cancelling my group site reservation for September. My initial thought was that only the group sites will be closed, until I saw that statement. Backcountry access from TM is allowed as I have the permits for the weekend of 6/19 Was your email from recreation.gov? The website announcement about the day-use passes does not mention the TM campground, which suggests that it (and most other campgrounds that in normal years take reservations, as well as thhe non-reservation campgrounds) will remain closed: "Will I need a reservation to visit Yosemite? Quotechulavista The federal gov can usually do whatever they want. I would say that there is an easy way around this, just like there is an easy way around the half dome lottery. How many PCT through-hikers enter Yosemite in a given day (assuming they spend at most one night in Yosemite) - 30? 50? I haven't looked at the quotas. But it's a small number of people, most of whom have already been on the trail for a while, and therefore are unlikely at that point in time to be infectious, even if they were previously infected, and they're spread apart. Prior to this news, I merely disliked Aramark... I mean, how much would it cost them to continue to let people stay in housing in Yosemite through the summer? A few thousand bucks? A few tens of thousands? Strange title to a posting here. Are you encouraging people to head to Bishop? Agreed. I suspect that before that moraine was blasted, Yosemite Valley flooded every spring, which would have inhibited tree growth. So while sequoias certainly aren't native to the valley, I strongly doubt that the extent of oak and conifer growth in the valley today is well beyond what it was 150 years ago. Can't help you with the online reservation system, haven't used it yet. Nor have I tried to game the lottery system with multiple requests from people in the same group, can't help you there either. Quoteriverhikerva We are not opposed to Half Dome as a day hike, but decided to try to backpack it to get the advantage of being up there early in the day. First of all to avoid peak cable traffic, and second of all because we are safety minded and already know the right decision if the weather looks bad when we get to the base of the cables.
