Not sure if it belongs here or the hiking/backpacking forum, but this is news. Apparently the first time it's ever been required although initially they're free and have no quotas.

I wonder how often this happens. I doubt he is the first or last to do so, either for day use passes, or any other pass or permit. I bet employees do it too as they are able, like a bartender giving a free drink to a friend, barista a free coffee, etc.
I'm conflicted. I can get on my high horse and condemn them, but if we had a friend in Yosemite that could get us a day use permit

I'm still LMAO about this!! Thank goodness there was no money allocated to Atchafalaya National Park in Louisiana.
Nah - Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau NHP. I've actually been there.
And I didn't listen to much other than clips of the mess up with Yo-Semite's. Did he have a shout out to the other agencies covered? I'd just like to see him try to say something complimentary about

So your complaining about the money?
I’d complain that this was a bipartisan bill but only Republicans were invited to the signing ceremony and John Lewis (instrumental in this bill) wasn’t mentioned. This is the kind of bill that deserved a bipartisan signing ceremony. When it was mentioned to the White House Press Secretary, she blamed Democrats for their resistance to worki

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion You'll typically need a day use reservation in order to drive your own vehicle in. If you take a bus (primarily YARTS, but I suppose including a tour bus) you won't need a reservation. You could also get a lodging reservation inside the park, as well as a vacation rental at Foresta, Wawona, or Yosemite West. I believe that once you're in they don't specifically care if you head straight or som

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Maybe take a bus in? The only problem is that it might be full. I understand that they give the highest priority to those transferring from Amtrak although I can't seem to book anything right now.

Do they still have to have a valid hiking permit starting the day after camping there In order to camp there?
There was always the standard exception (a single day at each campground) for those arriving by foot, bicycle, or bus.

Visitors arriving to Yosemite by bus, bicycle, or foot may also spend one night in each backpack

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Does day use require a reservation? Never done overnight there, but remember the self-issued permits at the entrances. I guess my most memorable visit was when I saw a group from a local brewery hauling a keg to the top of Mt Tallac.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion As a fan of our national parks, I've noted that the seems to be a lot of controversy over the National Park Service response to recent protests. Especially of the United States Park Police.
I guess most recently the only statue memorializing a Confederate figure in DC was toppled. I'll just say someone in a position of power is railing on the DC Mayor for allowing it to happen, but my unders

General Discussion I just wanted to clarify that it was always a backdoor way to stay in Yosemite without a reservation or waiting in line, as long as I remember. I think the entry ticket is supposed to be the method to prove it.
The wording is a bit confusing. I don't know exactly if it restricts those arriving by foot or bicycle. Entry by bicycle, foot, or horseback is allowed without a permit, but I'm not

I think they might have thought about stating it explicitly since the people coming by bus do not need to buy a day use permit
It's only a vehicle permit. At other NPS sites where there's some sort of vehicle or parking reservations, someone walking in or on bicycle can typically get in without restriction.
However, I read it over again, and I misinterpreted what they meant. They'

There was one statement in the Yosemite re-opening which confused me a little. From the reopening FAQ, under the question "Are any areas of the park closed?":

With a name like that, I'm not sure I'd want to hike it
It's a great hike. Unfortunately Kendall Vanhook Bumpass lost his leg when it busted through the crust and got scalded. But boardwalks make it pretty safe. It has the best collection of geothermal features in the United States outside of Yellowstone.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Just as a point of clarification, TM Campground doesn't have individual sites available for reservation, but site "types" are available for reservation. Someone with a reservation shows up and a site will be assigned at check-in, similar to reserving a hotel room. I've had that kind of reservation before at a Forest Service campground, although I recall I was allowed to look around fo

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Just to clarify, I looked up more info on Russian River Brewing, and they do have actual production at their Santa Rosa brewpub, The equipment isn't just for show.
Also - in Berkeley there's Trumer Pils, which makes an Austrian-style Pilsner. They're affiliated with the Austrian company with that name. They only make one beer though. There was Pyramid Breweries (based in the Seattle area),

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Chico is kind of far away. I will say my beer of choice when I got back from my backpacking trip in 2007 was a tall Sierra Nevada Pale Ale with a mini pizza on the Curry Village Pizza Deck.
The advantage of the Russian River Brewery and brewpub in Windsor is that they actually have brewery tours. The brewpub in Santa Rosa has a few tanks, but I'm not sure if they even use those. The product

And note that the price is now $80--still a screaming deal.
A bit complicated though. There's now a $20 annual pass option, where the purchase of 4 consecutive senior annual passes can be traded in for a lifetime pass. I don't know exactly how that works though. NPS that 4 previous senior annual passes can be traded for the lifetime pass, but I've seen other info saying that it

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Anyone see it yet? It's one of their original series featuring Julia Roberts in the starring role. Not to go too deep into it, but Yosemite forms an important part of the plot as a place that an ex-soldier has always wanted to visit. There's mention of the towns around Yosemite including Angels Camp (although I know it's not that close) and Fish Camp. I won't give any spoilers about the endin

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion OK. I do remember that a lot of the actions were put on hold, but I don't remember all the details.
The case I'm thinking of that might provide precedent is of a business in Napa, where an operator was brought in for an historic business. The operator tried to trademark the name, and the owner (and landlord) objected to the point where they were granted the trademark rights. So the operator

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I'd just note that back in 2006 I went with a trip with my parents. That was before they changed to the America the Beautiful pass and they called it something else. Those are still valid. I guess they have some recreation sites at reservoirs as well as camping
